Reading

Year 1 Recommended Reading List

Giving children access to all varieties of literature is extremely important for their success. Reading is a key life skill which is crucial to developing language skills and access to the wider curriculum. It provides children with the chance to respond and develop personal opinions encouraging deeper thoughts and their imagination.  Our aim is to develop a love and passion for reading both at home and school.  We have specially selected high quality reading books for each year group.  Some of these books can be found in the classroom and some are available for loan at Lees library. Encourage your child to read as many of these books as possible throughout the year.

Please select the document below to see the books we recommend.

Summer Term

At St Thomas’ we value the link between home and school and we recognise parental support is vital to a child’s progress and education. This year, we have developed how our children will complete home learning tasks, using evidence informed guidance from the Education Endowment Fund. Below are a range of age-appropriate ways that you can help support your child’s learning from home, complimenting their classroom work and ensuring accelerated progress. Please encourage your child to engage in these tasks, little and often, and let us know how they have done by writing in your child’s planner. Parental support for homework can promote the self-regulation in children necessary to achieve academic goals including goal-setting, planning, perseverance, and the management of time, materials, attentiveness, and emotions. There are learning opportunities all around us so let us embrace them and develop confident, well-rounded young people, who can flourish in the modern world.

Summer Term Second Half

PE is on a Wednesday and Friday and this half term we will be focusing on yoga and ball skills and multi skills. Please make sure that your child has the correct PE kit on and has both joggers and shorts for indoor/outdoor PE.

We will be visiting the library every other week on a Friday.

Please write in the planner when your child has read at home.

Discuss your child’s learning and topic work and what story books we have been reading.

Your child will need his / her planner everyday so that we are able to keep in contact and it will be signed every Friday.

Please ensure your child has a suitable waterproof coat with them every day as the children do play and learn outside in all weathers.

Please let a member of staff know in advance of any appointments so that they can be put in the register.
