Year 5 Recommended Reading List
Giving children access to all varieties of literature is extremely important for their success. Reading is a key life skill which is crucial to developing language skills and access to the wider curriculum. It provides children with the chance to respond and develop personal opinions encouraging deeper thoughts and their imagination. Our aim is to develop a love and passion for reading both at home and school. We have specially selected high quality reading books for each year group. Some of these books can be found in the classroom and some are available for loan at Lees library. Encourage your child to read as many of these books as possible throughout the year.
Please select the document below to see the books we recommend.

Summer Term
At St Thomas’ we value the link between home and school and we recognise parental support is vital to a child’s progress and education. This year, we have developed how our children will complete home learning tasks, using evidence informed guidance from the Education Endowment Fund. Below are a range of age-appropriate ways that you can help support your child’s learning from home, complimenting their classroom work and ensuring accelerated progress. Please encourage your child to engage in these tasks, little and often, and let us know how they have done by writing in your child’s planner. Parental support for homework can promote the self-regulation in children necessary to achieve academic goals including goal-setting, planning, perseverance, and the management of time, materials, attentiveness, and emotions. There are learning opportunities all around us so let us embrace them and develop confident, well-rounded young people, who can flourish in the modern world.
Reading
- Read the Year 5 texts on the website or any book for pleasure.
- Read different types of texts. How many different types can you find? For example, work signs, subtitles, magazines and recipes.
- Take a picture of you reading in the most obscure place.
- Listen to an audio book/podcast or a book read by a family member. A borrow box for audio books is available at Leesfield library.
- Visit a library. Remember a library card is free!
Writing
- Practice your handwriting.
- Write a daily/weekly diary.
- Write a book or chapter review. It could also be a review on a TV programme or film. We would love to hear about it in school!
- Research about our topic and write some facts. You could create a topic map/knowledge organiser.
- Write a glossary of words for a book you are reading.
- Play a child’s version of wordle, word search or cross word.
Maths
- Practice your times tables on TTRS.
- Play some top marks games around our topic or an area of weakness you need to work on. For example: hit the button.
- Linked to our shape knowledge, what shapes in your house or local area can you find? Can you draw a picture using shapes?
- Can you help budget for the daily shop? Or spend a £1 or any pocket money you have (real or theoretical!) and budget for what you would buy with it? Should you save it? What is the best deal?
- Have a go at following a recipe and helping to cook to practice your weighing skills.
Personal Development
- Work on your Year 5 Lees field life skills.
- Go to a club or extra-curricular activity.
- Have a day out or time spent with family and chat about it or to each other. This could be playing board games in your house, cooking together or visiting the library or park! Could you go on a walk and look at the history and/or nature around Oldham?
- Go outside and play or explore. This could be with friends or family. You could make a den!
- Plan or help plan a journey and follow timetable or map. When do you need to set off? What transport do you need to get? When will you arrive? What ticket do you need? How much does that cost?
- Can you practice your coding skills at home? Could you make your own game?
