Take a look at the fun things we have been doing in Year 5 this year.
DT: Phone Cases - July 2026
Year 5 put their sewing skills into practice to design and created their own phone case. How amazing do they look? Great creativity and plenty of perseverance shown, with a fabulous fitting product at the end!
DT: Applique Totes Bags - June 2026
Year 5 enjoyed a visit from a local artist and designer, Claire Louise Mathers, who helped them to design and sew their own tote bags. We persevered to attach buttons and applique, even in the heat! And don't they look amazing!
PSHE: Visit to Castleshaw with Roundthorn Academy - May 2026
Year 5 enjoyed their last visit with Roundthorn Academy at Castleshaw, doing lots of new activities and making even more new friends! It has been a fabulous experience!
PE: Dodgeball - May 2026
Year 5 recently got the opportunity to do some glow in the dark dodgeball and thoroughly enjoyed it!
Geography: Field Trip 'Our Local Area' - May 2026
Year 5 applied their compass and map reading skills to a Geography field trip walk around the local area, looking at the different symbols they could see and find. We also discussed and applied prior learning to see physical and human features, as well as rural and urban features. We even compared a modern and Victorian maps to see how these features have changed over time and discussed some reasons why. Everyone took part and shared lots of ideas well. We had a lot of fun but were quite tired and hot by the end!
Science: Circle of Life - April 2026
This week, Year 5 have started their 'Circle of Life' topic and paid a visit to Reception to see the eggs and hatchlings as part of our life cycles learning! We also enjoyed a trip down memory lane in the annex with past teachers!
Music: Musical Knowledge - March 2026
Year 5 have been revisiting their musical knowledge in their reflect, rewind, replay topic, consolidating their knowledge and skills to play musical notes on a stave and improvise.
PSHE: The Linking Project - March 2026
This week Year 5 participated in the Oldham Schools Linking project at Roundthorn Primary School and met friends, old and new, from the school. Year 5 enjoyed not only meeting friends but also lighting fires and toasting marshmallows in forest school; making friendship bracelets; playing games in PE and gifting a handmade journal book to their new friend helped by a very talented local artist. We cannot wait to see our new friends at Roundthorn when we meet in May at Castleshaw for more team building and fun activities!
Maths: Shapes - March 2025
This week year 5 have started their shape topic and have been exploring angles. We did a fun practical lesson measuring the angles on the tables using protractors! We hope Mr Spiller doesn't mind!
English: 'The Golden Horseman of Baghdad' drama - February 2026
In English, Year 5 did some drama to explore character's thoughts and feelings in the story of 'The Golden Horseman of Baghdad' as part of our Early Islamic Civilisation learning.
Music: Fresh Prince of Bel Air - January 2026
During our Fresh Prince of Bel Air topic, Year 5 learnt all about hip hop and rap, even composing their own amazing raps about Leesfield Life and ternary pieces on the glockenspiels.
PE: Bikeability - January 2026
We have been gaining practical skills and understanding how to cycle safely on today's roads.
PE: Target Activities - December 2025
Year 5 enjoyed taking part in target related activities as part of the whole school archery day! Some budding sports people in the making and new talents of tomorrow discovered!
English: Oliver Twist - November 2025
This week Year 5 started their new English learning all about Oliver Twist. We learnt all about the history of the workhouse and some of us even got to dress up like workhouse children! We even got to hot seat and interview Oliver and Mr Bumble!
Science: Space - September 2025
Year 5 have loved their space topic and have even done some wonderful pieces of homework at home! Well done Year 5!
History: Mayan Social Structure - September 2025
The children were acting out the different social classes of the Mayan times. King, nobles and priests, scholars, merchants and artisans, farmers and the laborers and slaves.
