Religious Education is inclusive for all children taught throughout the school following the new Manchester Diocese Syllabus – RE Today and reflects the overall aims, values, and philosophy of the school. At St Thomas’ Leesfield, Christianity plays a vital role in the children’s learning as we are a Church of England school. Religious Education links in with all other curriculum areas, particularly PSHE, in promoting the spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development of our children.

Pupils will also study in-depth, the religious traditions of other faiths, including non-religions. The curriculum implementation is taught through systematic units and core concepts which are revisited on a spiral curriculum. We encourage our pupils to ask questions about the world and make sense of beliefs, values and experiences. This is to enable pupils to understand the impact and make links with their own faith and beliefs. Our Religious Education Curriculum is high quality, well thought out and is cohesively sequenced and planned to demonstrate progression.

Our Ethos is developed around the 12 Christian values and underpins everything we do in our school.

Through our whole school ethos and the teaching of RE we aim to:

• Demonstrate high quality learning for RE against the planned outcomes (RE Today/Sticky Learning).
• Provide a celebration of learning for each topic/ unit which demonstrates progression across the school.
• Embed a Class Reflection Book, to develop the children’s thoughts and feelings around the R.E. topics and Christian values/themes.
• Evidence Pupil Voice/Pupil discussions about their learning through Pupils Chats and Ethos Committee (Headteacher as well as Subject Leader).
• Plan and organise a range of visiting vicars and clergy to develop the children’s understanding of Christianity.
• Plan and organise visits to other religious places such as local Mosques (Linking Project).
• Enable our Year 3 and 5 children to take part in the Linking Project to work with a different Oldham primary school to develop links and friendships with children from another culture and religion.
• Ensure that each class is taught six units of RE through weekly discrete lessons, allowing children to have the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in their learning and embed the teaching through ‘Sticky Learning’ objectives (see Subject Leaders Long Term Plans).
• In addition, each class covers Christmas and Easter celebrations in two discreet topics.
• School is supported by Mrs Butt (Manchester Mission), who delivers half termly Collective Worship to develop children’s faith and understanding.
• Each half term, a different class leads our collective worship, based on our current Christian Value. Families and friends are welcomed into school to join us and celebrate the teachings of Jesus.
• Reverend Paul Monk leads important celebrations in church, including a termly Eucharist Service.

We value the religious background of all members of the school community and hope that this will encourage individuals to share their own experiences with others freely. All religions and their communities are treated with respect and sensitivity, and we value the links, which are, and can be made between home, school, and a faith community. We promote teaching in Religious Education that stresses open enquiry and first-hand experiences wherever possible for both staff and children. Our Christian Vision underpins this clearly, guided by the teachings of St Paul: ‘You are all one in Christ’.
